Akwa Ibom Govt Declares Healthcare Emergency

The Akwa Ibom State Government has declared a state of emergency in its healthcare sector to fast-track reforms and enhance service delivery in alignment with Governor Pastor Umo Eno’s ARISE agenda.

Commissioner for Information, Elder Aniekan Umanah, announced the measures following the weekly State Executive Council meeting.

Key directives include upgrading medical facilities statewide, reopening the recruitment portal to hire 2,000 healthcare workers—waiving the voters’ identity card requirement—and engaging retired medical personnel on contract.

The council also mandated the enhancement of health training institutions and increased enrollment and training of professionals.

To ensure swift implementation, an Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee, comprising relevant ministries and agencies, has been established to oversee the emergency measures.

The council also proposed a ₦695 billion supplementary budget, increasing the 2025 budget to ₦1.65 trillion, with ₦125.66 billion for recurrent expenditure and ₦569.34 billion for capital projects.

This budget will fund the new minimum wage, NYSC allowances for corps members within and outside Akwa Ibom, flood and erosion control, and completion of inflation-affected projects.

Additional allocations will support new infrastructure, Ibom CNG Mass Transit buses, newly created ministries (Sports, Digital Economy, Humanitarian Services, and Rural Development and Cooperatives), the Tree Crop Revolution program, new housing estates, renovation of the House of Assembly complex, acquisition of new aircraft, and development of the ARISE Shopping City.

The meeting, chaired by Governor Eno, was attended by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of the Civil Service, the Executive Assistant and Chief Delivery Advisor, commissioners, and special advisers.
