Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, have called on Nigerians to remain patient with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, assuring that its economic and political reforms, though causing hardship, will pave the way for prosperity.
The appeal was made during the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, as announced in a Sunday statement by Anietie Ekong, Special Assistant to the Senate President on Media/Communication.
Since the removal of the fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, petrol prices have surged over threefold, food inflation has exceeded 35%, and the naira has faced a volatile decline against the dollar, intensifying concerns about rising poverty levels.
Addressing the gathering, Akpabio compared Nigeria’s rebuilding process to constructing a cathedral, requiring time, sacrifice, and resilience.
“Do not despair when the winds blow strongly or the scaffolding shakes,” he said. “A nation is like a mighty cathedral—it is not raised overnight, but stone by stone, prayer by prayer, hand by hand.”
He urged Nigerians to renew hope and work together—Church, State, and citizens—for a brighter future.Representing President Tinubu, Akume emphasized the administration’s commitment to stabilizing the economy, attracting investments, and implementing reforms for long-term benefits.
He called on the Church to support these efforts, highlighting social investment programs aimed at ensuring inclusivity.
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, also praised the Catholic Church’s role in advocating for justice and democracy while outlining his administration’s efforts to combat poverty and improve welfare.
The plenary, attended by the Apostolic Nuncio, Most Rev. Michael Francis Crotty, Catholic bishops, federal lawmakers, state officials, and worshippers, underscored the collaboration needed to navigate Nigeria’s challenging economic transition.
