Otunba Kole Omololu, National Organising Secretary of Afenifere, has welcomed the Senate’s decision to lift the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan but insisted that her allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio must be thoroughly investigated.
“Restoring her does not absolve her claims from judicial scrutiny,” Omololu stated.
Expressing concern over the impact of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s accusations on Nigeria’s international reputation, Afenifere described the issue as a matter of national interest that transcends political divides.
Omololu urged the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to investigate her claims, both domestic and international, to uncover the truth.
The group noted Akpoti-Uduaghan’s prior sexual harassment allegations against former presidential spokesman Reno Omokri, which were settled out of court, questioning the credibility of her current claims against Akpabio.
“Without proof, her allegations raise suspicion,” Omololu said, citing her description of Akpabio as a “dictator” and the lack of evidence more than six months after her accusations.
Afenifere also raised concerns about Akpoti-Uduaghan’s participation in an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) session in New York, questioning whether it was officially sanctioned.
“If she attended without due nomination, it suggests manipulation of public institutions for personal gain,” Omololu remarked.
The group warned that reinstating Akpoti-Uduaghan without resolving these issues could validate her allegations globally, citing the case of British MP Keith Vaz, who faced suspension and a permanent ban for false accusations.
Afenifere called on security agencies to probe all claims to ensure justice and prevent actions that undermine Nigeria’s collective interest.
