Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, the representative for Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State, has resigned his membership from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), effective immediately, citing irreconcilable differences over the party's direction and internal leadership crises.
In a letter dated September 6, 2025, addressed to the NNPP National Chairman, Jibrin expressed gratitude for the platform the party provided during his tenure but lamented the escalating factionalism that he believes is undermining the NNPP's potential as a viable opposition force.
"After careful reflection and consultation with my constituents, I have decided to step away from the NNPP to pursue avenues that better align with my vision for grassroots development and national progress," Jibrin stated in the letter, obtained by reporters.
He highlighted his contributions to legislative reforms on housing and economic matters but accused party leaders of prioritizing personal agendas over policy implementation.
Jibrin's exit comes amid growing turmoil within the NNPP, particularly in Kano, the party's stronghold, where Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has faced internal challenges from rival factions.
The lawmaker, known for his vocal advocacy and past controversies during his time in the All Progressives Congress (APC) before defecting to NNPP in 2022, has been a key ally to Governor Yusuf.
His resignation is seen as a blow to the party's unity ahead of the 2027 elections, potentially weakening its hold in northern Nigeria.Sources close to Jibrin indicate he may be considering a return to the APC or joining another major party, though he has not confirmed any immediate plans.
"This is not the end of my service to Kano; it's a new chapter," he told supporters gathered at his constituency office in Bebeji on Sunday, where hundreds rallied in solidarity.
The move has sparked speculation of a broader realignment in Kano politics, with analysts suggesting it could signal defections from other NNPP lawmakers disillusioned by the party's performance in addressing economic hardships.
NNPP spokesperson Abdulrahman Yakubu described the resignation as "regrettable but not unexpected," urging Jibrin to reconsider. "The NNPP remains committed to its manifesto, and we wish him well," Yakubu said.
