2027: Inviting Obi Back Will Ruin PDP - Wike Warns

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a strong caution to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that reintegrating former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi would spell doom for the opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a media chat on Monday, September 1, 2025, Wike described the potential move as hypocritical and ideologically bankrupt, accusing Obi of previously denouncing the PDP as "rotten" before potentially seeking its platform for personal ambition.

Wike, a former Rivers State Governor and influential PDP chieftain despite his current alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, reflected on the party's 2023 electoral debacle, attributing it to internal missteps like allowing both the presidential candidate and national chairman to hail from the North.

"From day one, I told my colleagues, PDP, you are shooting yourself. If you allow what is going on to continue, you’ll pay. You cannot have the presidential candidate at the same time as the national chairman of the party," he recounted, labeling the decision as "stealing" positions and ignoring pleas for fairness and balance.

He expressed no remorse for the PDP's losses, stating, "It is better now you have stolen the presidential ticket—and again stole the national chairman. I said it will purge you. And it really purged them. I have no regret for it."

Wike advocated for the presidency to rotate back to the South to uphold equity, justice, and zoning principles, which he believes are essential for the party's survival and relevance.

Dismissing speculation about Obi's return—amid ongoing political realignments and his own recent criticisms of Obi's ambiguity on party affiliation—Wike questioned the logic: "To what? Bringing Obi to where? You want to kill the party? Obi that was abusing the party, saying it is rotten—so the party is now good enough for him? Ambition can make people even go to Satan’s house."

He further warned, "If you want to destroy this party, dare it—bring Obi. There’s no way he will come back just because of ambition. No more ideology, no longer principle."
