Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to prioritize the interests of the Yoruba community if he wins the presidency in 2027, while appealing for their support in the upcoming election.
Highlighting his deep personal and familial ties to the South-West, Atiku sought to dispel fears of ethnic domination.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by his media consultant, Kola Johnson, Atiku described the Yoruba as his "extended family and in-laws," citing his marriage to his first wife, Titi, a Yoruba woman, in the 1970s.
The couple, who remain together, have four children who affectionately call him ‘Baba Rere’ (good father).
Atiku emphasized his detribalized nature, stating, “The Yoruba have always held a special place in my heart. The notion that my presidency would lead to Hausa/Fulani domination over the Yoruba or other ethnic groups is baseless. The Yoruba are my larger family.”
He further highlighted his long-standing ability to connect with people across diverse tribes, ethnicities, and religions, underscoring his commitment to inclusive governance.
Atiku assured that, if elected in 2027, the interests of the Yoruba would be a top priority in his policymaking.
