The World Bank has approved a $300 million financing package to support Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen resilience and expand access to essential services for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and their host communities in Northern Nigeria.
The funding aims to address the humanitarian crisis in the region, where millions have been displaced due to ongoing conflicts, including the Boko Haram insurgency.
The initiative, announced on Monday, will focus on improving access to healthcare, education, water, and sanitation for IDPs and vulnerable communities in states such as Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe.
It will also support livelihood programs to enhance economic opportunities and build resilience against future shocks.
According to the World Bank, the project targets over 1.5 million beneficiaries, including women and youth, who have been disproportionately affected by the crisis.
“This financing will help Nigeria address critical needs of displaced populations while fostering sustainable recovery in host communities,” said a World Bank spokesperson.
The program includes measures to strengthen local infrastructure, improve social services, and promote community-driven development to ensure long-term stability.
The funding comes at a critical time, as Nigeria grapples with over 3.2 million IDPs, according to recent United Nations estimates.
The World Bank’s intervention is expected to complement ongoing government and humanitarian efforts to alleviate these challenges.
Nigerian officials welcomed the support, with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs pledging to ensure transparent and effective implementation.
However, some stakeholders have urged accountability to prevent mismanagement, citing past concerns over aid distribution.
“This is a lifeline for our people, but it must reach those who need it most,” said Fatima Usman, an advocate for IDP rights in Maiduguri.
The project is set to roll out in phases over the next five years, with regular monitoring to assess its impact.
