Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has alleged that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, is critical of President Bola Tinubu due to being overlooked for the vice-presidential position.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, August 19, Wike claimed Lawal visited him in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, alongside a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, shortly after Tinubu announced his running mate, expressing frustration over not being selected.
“His anger was that he thought Mr President would have chosen him as the vice-presidential candidate. Having not done that, he let loose,” Wike stated, describing Lawal’s recent criticisms of Tinubu’s governance style as driven by personal disappointment rather than objective concerns.
Wike expressed dismay at Lawal’s choice of words, particularly his claim that Tinubu is “full of himself,” calling it unfortunate and unbefitting of a former ally.
Lawal, who has been vocal about the administration’s economic policies, including the 2023 fuel subsidy removal, recently stated he would have resigned or been sacked if he served under Tinubu, accusing the government of lacking approachability.
Wike countered that governance relies on teamwork, urging Nigerians to engage with ministers and advisers rather than expecting direct access to the president.
