The United States Mission Nigeria and British authorities have praised the Nigerian government and its security forces for the successful arrest of two key leaders of the Ansaru terrorist group.
The commendations were shared on Monday, August 18, 2025, in separate posts on X, following an announcement by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.Ribadu revealed that the leaders of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, known as Ansaru, were apprehended between May and July 2025 in a high-risk, intelligence-driven counter-terrorism operation.
The arrested include Mahmud Muhammad Usman, the self-styled Emir of Ansaru, who orchestrated terrorist sleeper cells across Nigeria and masterminded high-profile kidnappings and armed robberies to fund the group.
His deputy, Mahmud al-Nigeri, led the “Mahmudawa” cell operating around Kainji National Park, spanning Niger and Kwara states and extending into Benin Republic.
The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, via its official X account, hailed the operation as a significant victory in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.
The British authorities echoed similar praise, showing the importance of the arrests in curbing Ansaru’s activities.
