The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has called on the people of Nigeria’s Southeast region to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, describing it as a strategic step toward securing an Igbo presidency in the future.
In a statement issued on Monday, Umahi dismissed the possibility of an Igbo presidency in 2027 as “unrealistic,” warning against “darkening counsel” that misleads the region into believing it is achievable in the upcoming election cycle.
Speaking to journalists, Umahi emphasized that President Tinubu has shown “unwavering love and fairness” to the Southeast through significant infrastructure investments.
He highlighted projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, where over 80% of Section 1 (47.47 kilometers from Ahmadu Bello Way to Lekki Deep Sea Port) is complete, and the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, a colonial-era trade route revived under Tinubu’s leadership.
Umahi also noted the Second Niger Bridge, with 30% of its cost already paid by the administration, as evidence of Tinubu’s commitment to the region.
“All the governors in the Southeast, regardless of party affiliation, are working with the President,” Umahi said, citing the support of the region’s five governors—two from the All Progressives Congress (APC), one from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), one from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and one from the Labour Party.
He praised their efforts and urged residents to support both the governors and Tinubu for their respective second terms to ensure the completion of ongoing projects.
Umahi specifically called out opposition figures, including former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, urging them to align with Tinubu for the region’s benefit.
“Leadership is about the people, not self. If someone is already doing what you would have done for your people, support him.
The minister concluded by commending Tinubu’s vision, likening him to biblical Joseph for reviving decades-old infrastructure plans.
“These projects testify to his commitment to national development and a better future for all Nigerians,” Umahi said, urging the Southeast to seize the opportunity for integration and progress under Tinubu’s administration.
