The UK has seen a significant decline in visas issued to foreign nationals for work, study, family, and humanitarian purposes, with work-related applications experiencing the steepest fall.
According to Home Office data, 834,977 entry visas were granted in the year ending June 2025, a 32% drop from 1.23 million the previous year.
This marks the lowest total since September 2021, when 802,415 visas were issued.Work visas saw the largest decline, nearly halving from 545,855 to 286,071, a 48% decrease. Study visas fell 18%, from 530,312 to 435,891, while family visas dropped 15%, from 83,912 to 70,961.
Humanitarian and resettlement visa categories also declined significantly. Ukraine scheme visas fell 48% to 14,216, British National Overseas visas from Hong Kong dropped 47% to 11,804, and EU Settlement Scheme visas decreased 34% to 9,357.
Additionally, 3,640 visas were issued to dependants accompanying others, and timing was possible because migration levels had previously hit record highs.
He suggested that further, though likely smaller, declines could occur as recent restrictions, such as the closure of the care worker recruitment route, take effect.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized that the government is "bringing legal migration back under control," noting that stricter visa controls and higher skill requirements outlined in a recent White Paper are expected to further reduce visa numbers.
