UEFA has imposed €5,000 fines on Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski for breaching Anti-Doping Regulations following the club’s 4-3 extra-time defeat to Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg.
The loss at San Siro ended Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the final, and the subsequent sanctions have added to the club’s woes.
According to UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, Yamal and Lewandowski violated Articles 21.8 and 21.10(a) of the Anti-Doping Regulations by failing to follow the Doping Control Officer’s instructions and not proceeding immediately to the Doping Control Station after the match.
The breaches, deemed minor, resulted in the €5,000 fines for each player, effective immediately.
Barcelona’s troubles extend beyond the players, with manager Hansi Flick facing a €20,000 fine and a one-match suspension in UEFA club competitions.
Flick was found guilty of breaching general principles of conduct (Article 11(1) DR) and violating basic rules of decent conduct (Article 11(2)(b) DR) during the heated semi-final clash.
His assistant, Marcus Sorg, received identical penalties for the same infractions, meaning both will miss Barcelona’s next European fixture from the bench.
The club itself was also sanctioned, ordered to pay €5,250 for fans throwing objects (Article 16(2)(b) DR) and €2,500 for the lighting of fireworks (Article 16(2)(c) DR) during the match.
These incidents compounded a challenging night for the Blaugrana, who fought valiantly but fell short in a thrilling seven-goal encounter.
The sanctions come at a critical time for Barcelona, who are now preparing for their next European campaign while navigating the fallout from their semi-final exit.
The fines and suspensions are expected to serve as a reminder of UEFA’s strict enforcement of its regulations, both on and off the pitch.
