A violent clash between farmers and herders in Bandawa, Karim-Lamido Local Government Council of Taraba State, claimed the lives of two soldiers on Wednesday morning, August 20, 2025, intensifying tensions in the region.
The confrontation, part of ongoing conflicts plaguing rural Taraba, erupted early Wednesday, with the soldiers, deployed for peacekeeping, caught in the crossfire.
A local community leader reported, “The fighting escalated quickly, and the soldiers lost their lives while trying to intervene.”
The violence sparked widespread panic, with residents fleeing as farmlands and homes were set ablaze.
Taraba State Police Command spokesperson James Leshen confirmed that security forces have been deployed to restore calm and assess casualties.
Musa Garba, a youth leader in Karim-Lamido, called the soldiers’ deaths “a tragic wake-up call for urgent government action,” urging a lasting solution to the recurring violence.
“Our people cannot keep fleeing their homes,” he said.
Lieutenant Umar Mohammad, acting spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, confirmed the incident, though an official statement is still pending.
