A 28-year-old welder, Kabir Usman, died tragically when a tanker truck he was repairing exploded in Tafa town, located along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway in Kagarko Local Government Area, Kaduna State.
The incident, which occurred around 12 pm on Friday, was confirmed by Tafa resident Ahmad Bunkau. “I was in a mosque preparing for Juma’at prayers when I heard a loud explosion.
Flames shot into the sky, followed by multiple blasts for about 30 minutes until volunteers extinguished the fire,” Bunkau told Daily Trust.
A police source revealed that attempts to secure firefighters from nearby Sabon-Wuse in Tafa LGA, Niger State, failed as the officials refused to respond, citing jurisdictional boundaries with Kagarko LGA.
An officer from Tafa police division, located adjacent to the welding workshop, described chaos among colleagues who initially mistook the explosion for a bomb attack.
Many fled in panic before their Divisional Police Officer, SP Ibrahim Idris, led them to the scene to assist volunteers in dousing the flames.Usman’s remains were later taken to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Memorial Hospital in Sabon-Wuse.
