A tragic incident has shaken the community of Mayo-Goyi, a suburb of Jalingo, Taraba State, where a newly recruited soldier, Dauda Dedan, allegedly stabbed a police constable, Aaron John, to de@th.
The incident, which occurred at 9:00 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2025, has heightened tensions and raised concerns about civilian-military relations in the region.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Taraba State Command, James Lashen, the altercation began when residents alerted Constable John to a misunderstanding involving Dedan.
As John intervened to mediate, the situation escalated, leading to the soldier allegedly stabbing the officer.
Despite efforts to save him, John succumbed to his injuries.
Lashen confirmed the incident to journalists in Jalingo on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, noting that the suspect, Dedan, is currently at large.
“We have reported the matter to the 6 Brigade headquarters of the Nigerian Army, and we have been given full assurances of tracking down the fugitive soldier to face the full wrath of the law,” Lashen stated.
The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation to apprehend Dedan and ensure justice is served.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, with many calling for swift action to address the growing trend of violent encounters involving security personnel.
The Taraba State Police Command has urged calm while emphasizing their collaboration with the military to resolve the case.
