RMAFC Proposes Salary Review for Nigerian Political Office Holders

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is planning to revise the salaries of Nigeria’s political office holders, which have remained unchanged since 2008, according to Chairman Mohammed Shehu.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, August 18, Shehu revealed that President Bola Tinubu earns N1.5 million monthly, while ministers receive less than N1 million.

Shehu criticized the outdated pay structure, noting, “Paying the President N1.5 million a month for a population of over 200 million is a joke.”

He argued that low salaries for key officials, like ministers and the Attorney-General, compared to agency heads earning significantly more, undermine performance and fairness.

“It’s not right,” he stated, urging public support for reasonable salary adjustments to reflect their responsibilities.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, however, opposed the proposed salary hike, citing rising inequality and hidden perks already inflating government earnings.

Shehu clarified that RMAFC’s mandate is limited to setting salaries for political, judicial, and legislative office holders, not civil servants or public sector workers.

Additionally, RMAFC has initiated a review of Nigeria’s revenue-sharing formula, unchanged since 1992, which allocates 52.68% to the Federal Government, 26.72% to states, 20.60% to local governments, and 4.18% for special funds.
