Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, on Friday refrained from commenting on growing calls for his former principal to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The political activist and commentator, known for his vocal opinions, sidestepped the issue during an interview with Channels Television, leaving speculation about Jonathan’s political comeback unanswered.
There is increasing buzz around Jonathan’s potential return to Nigeria’s political stage, a decade after his 2015 election loss to the late President Muhammadu Buhari.
Supporters have been urging the former president, a prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure, to re-enter the presidential race, citing his experience and perceived stabilizing influence.
When pressed for his stance on the matter, Omokri declined to offer a clear opinion, neither endorsing nor dismissing the calls.
His reticence marks a departure from his usual outspoken critiques, particularly regarding Jonathan’s tenure, which he has previously scrutinized on issues like economic management and security.
“I have unconditional love for Goodluck Jonathan. And so, I would not criticise or give an opinion on anything he does on live television,” he said.
Explaining the depth of his relationship with Jonathan, Omokri, who served as his social media aide, said, “This is a man who came to California and spent 10 days with me and my family.”
On Thursday, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum said the party’s door is open for Jonathan to enter the PDP presidential race.
During an interview on Thursday, Mohammed described Jonathan as one the “most celebrated politicians today,” and believes the ex-president will be a good fit for the party’s ticket.
“But certainly, (former) President Jonathan is one of the candidates we are thinking of, if he joins us and opens his mind to run. And even other people like (former) governor Obi, because if he decides to come to a better platform where there are no encumbrances, he will be given the opportunity too,” Mohammed said.
