A civil society organizations aligned with the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) staged a peaceful protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, demanding the inclusion of the party’s candidates in the upcoming nationwide bye-elections.
The demonstration, which began around 11:00 AM, saw dozens of protesters wielding placards and banners with messages such as “INEC, who is using you against LP?”, “Mahmood, stop destroying democracy in Nigeria,” and “Tell INEC to obey court orders.”
The protesters, expressing frustration over INEC’s rejection of the Abure faction’s candidate list for the August 16 bye-elections across the Federal Capital Territory and 12 other states, accused the commission of undermining democracy.
The Abure-led faction claims their exclusion stems from INEC’s recognition of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led leadership, following a Supreme Court ruling on April 4, 2025, which declared Abure’s tenure as LP national chairman expired on June 8, 2023.
The demonstrators called on INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu to reverse the decision and comply with court orders they believe support their faction’s legitimacy.
The protest remained peaceful, with security personnel present to maintain order.
The Labour Party’s internal leadership crisis continues to fuel tensions, with the Usman-led faction disowning the protest and labeling its organizers as “impostors.” INEC is yet to respond officially to the demonstration.
