In a devastating assault on August 8, 2025, hundreds of armed gunmen stormed Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, k!lling five people, including a police officer identified as Inspector Adejumo Wasiu.
The attackers, arriving on motorcycles, targeted the Divisional Police Headquarters and raided the local market, firing indiscriminately and causing widespread panic.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the attack on Sunday through a statement by its spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
The assailants’ rampage forced residents to flee their homes, seeking safety in neighboring communities.
A swift response from a combined team of Nigerian Army troops, police operatives, Department of State Services (DSS) personnel, vigilantes, and local hunters repelled the attack, restored order, and launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
On Sunday, Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo, accompanied by the State Director of the DSS, conducted an on-the-spot assessment in Babanla.
They met with the traditional ruler, Oba Yusuf Aliyu Alabi Arojojoye II, to discuss strategies for consolidating peace and enhancing security collaboration.
The delegation inspected key locations, including the police headquarters and market, to ensure stability was restored.
CP Ojo ordered sustained armed patrols, continuous intelligence gathering, and the deployment of specialized tracking teams to apprehend the attackers.
The DSS pledged ongoing intelligence support, while the police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property across Kwara State. Residents were urged to remain calm, vigilant, and provide credible information to aid security efforts.
This incident follows a pattern of violence in the region, with a similar attack on July 31, 2025, in nearby Ganmu village, where three travelers were killed and two others abducted.
The recurring attacks have heightened fears among locals, prompting calls for stronger security measures.
