Police K!ll Six Suspected Kidnappers in Fierce Gun Battle in Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the Abia State Police Command neutralized six suspected kidnappers during a gun battle at Ikot Ukpon Village in Obot Akara Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, on August 21, 2025.

The operation, which targeted a criminal hideout, also led to the arrest of six other suspects and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, 57 rounds of live ammunition, one locally made pistol, six magazines, and a bag containing suspected charms and spiritual items.

According to Maureen Chinaka, the command’s spokesperson, the raid occurred at around 8:30 pm following credible intelligence. As the operatives exited the hideout, they were ambushed by gang members attempting to free their associates, sparking a fierce gunfight.

“The six arrested suspects, while attempting to escape, sustained gunshot injuries and died en route to the hospital,” Chinaka stated.

Two police officers were also injured and are receiving medical treatment.

The suspects are believed to be linked to the March 4, 2025, kidnapping of Sobaz Oil and Gas’s Director along Azumini Road, Ukwa West LGA, which resulted in the deaths of ASP Tanko Naptip of Rivers Command, businessman Anayo Ukwu, and Chiedozie Chijioke, Managing Director of Dozzman Filling Station.

The Abia Police Command has vowed to continue tracking fleeing gang members, some of whom escaped with bullet wounds.

Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa urged the public to report anyone with gunshot injuries, emphasizing the command’s commitment to eradicating crime.
