Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has filed a defamation lawsuit against prominent activist Deji Adeyanju, represented by his legal team led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Alex Ejesieme.
The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, accuses Adeyanju of making false and damaging statements against Obi on social media and public platforms, tarnishing his reputation as a statesman and political figure.
Details of the specific defamatory remarks were not immediately disclosed in court filings, but sources close to the matter indicate they relate to recent political discourse involving Obi's activities and statements.
Alex Ejesieme, a renowned litigator known for handling high-profile cases, confirmed the filing in a statement, emphasizing Obi's commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting his integrity.
"Mr. Obi has always advocated for accountability and truth in public life. This action is a necessary step to counter baseless allegations that seek to undermine his character," Ejesieme said.
Deji Adeyanju, a vocal critic of the Nigerian government and opposition figures, is yet to respond publicly to the lawsuit.
He is known for his activism through the Concerned Nigerians group and frequent commentary on national issues via X (formerly Twitter).
The case is expected to be assigned to a judge soon, with hearings potentially commencing in the coming weeks.
