Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, made a high-profile appearance on Wednesday at the launch of two political books authored by veteran journalist and strategist Ike Abonyi.
The event, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, has sparked renewed speculation about Obi’s political future amid ongoing efforts by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to woo him back into its fold ahead of the 2027 elections.
One of the books, Wadata Wonders: Memoirs of a Partisan Journalist, is named after the PDP’s national secretariat, reflecting Abonyi’s tenure as Media Adviser to two PDP National Chairmen.
Abonyi, a former Group Political Editor of THISDAY and pioneer Deputy Managing Director of New Telegraph, chronicles his experiences in the political sphere in the memoir.
The second book, not detailed at the event, further underscores Abonyi’s insights into Nigeria’s political landscape.
Obi’s presence at an event attended by prominent PDP figures comes just days after the party openly acknowledged its efforts to bring the former vice-presidential candidate back into its ranks.
While Obi remained silent on the matter, his attendance has intensified discussions about a potential political realignment.
The event was chaired by respected economist and 2023 PDP presidential aspirant Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.
Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Senator Bala Mohammed, was named Chief Book Presenter but was represented by Emmanuel Agbo, Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
The keynote address, titled “How Did We Get Here?”, was delivered by former Minister of Information and immediate past President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo.
Obi’s appearance, against the backdrop of the PDP’s public overtures, has left political observers questioning whether the Labour Party stalwart is considering a return to his former party.
