Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye has stirred political waters with his candid remarks about the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a “national altar call” for Nigerians seeking change, while admitting that “not everybody in ADC is a saint.”
Melaye made these statements during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, August 1, 2025, as he discussed the ADC’s role in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Melaye, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ADC, alleged that the PDP has lost its independence as an opposition party, claiming it has been “purchased” by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The PDP is a parastatal of the APC. They take dates for NEC meetings and NWC from Aso Villa,” Melaye asserted, questioning the opposition credentials of PDP governors.
He argued that their inaction has allowed the APC to dominate unchecked, leaving Nigeria in a precarious socio-economic state.
Describing the ADC as a movement driven by conscience, Melaye likened the party to a spiritual revival, emphasizing that its members are united by a desire to address Nigeria’s challenges.
“Why Nigerians should think differently about the ADC is that once there’s an altar call in the church of God, only those who are emotionally affected, have conscience, and are ready to leave darkness and move into light respond,” he said.
“Not everybody in ADC is a saint, but everybody who has joined ADC is concerned about Nigeria.”
Looking toward 2027, Melaye expressed confidence that the ADC would produce a formidable candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu.
However, he emphasized that his current focus is on stabilizing the party and organizing a transparent convention to select a presidential candidate, rather than endorsing any individual, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
“I will not be talking about a presidential candidate or preference for anybody until we get the party completely stabilized,” he said.
