NOA Applauds Imo State’s Ban on Lavish Graduation Parties for Young Students

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has praised the Imo State Government’s decision to prohibit extravagant graduation parties for nursery, primary, and junior secondary school students, calling it a vital step toward curbing excesses and fostering responsible values among young learners.

NOA Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement on X, criticized the trend of lavish celebrations, stating they promote unrealistic expectations, encourage extravagance, and impose significant financial burdens on parents.

He warned that such practices undermine the values of hard work, humility, and delayed gratification, which are crucial for personal and national development.

Issa-Onilu highlighted NOA’s commitment to collaborating with state governments, schools, and parents to promote discipline and modesty in children’s upbringing.

He noted that Imo’s ban aligns with NOA’s ongoing campaign against extreme “sign-out” practices.

The NOA also commended Imo State’s directive to stop school proprietors from changing textbooks annually, a move expected to ease financial pressures on families and enhance access to education.

The state’s policy, which restricts graduation ceremonies to Primary 6 and Senior Secondary students, aligns with Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system, ensuring consistency with national standards.

Issa-Onilu urged other states to adopt similar measures to create a disciplined, value-driven education system emphasizing academic focus over extravagance.

He emphasized that these policies contribute to a healthier educational environment rooted in resilience and perseverance.
