17-year-old Abdul Jabar Adama has become the first Nigerian swimmer to win a medal at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships, securing silver in the men’s 50m butterfly with a time of 23.64 seconds on August 23, 2025, in Romania.
Adama, who trains at Mount Kelly Swimming Academy in the UK, broke the Nigerian national record twice in one day, clocking 23.61 seconds in the preliminaries and 23.48 seconds in the semifinals.
His performance follows a dominant showing at the 2025 Africa Junior Championships, where he won three golds and a bronze.
The National Sports Commission praised Adama’s achievement as a milestone for Nigerian sports, with NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade noting his potential for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
