Nigeria Unveils Digital Museum to Preserve, Showcase Rich Cultural Heritage

In a landmark move to safeguard and promote its cultural legacy, Nigeria launched its first digital museum on August 19, 2025, aimed at digitizing the nation’s vast cultural heritage.

The initiative, spearheaded by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM), seeks to make Nigeria’s historical artifacts, artworks, and cultural treasures accessible to a global audience through a state-of-the-art online platform.

The digital museum, unveiled in Abuja, features high-resolution images, 3D models, and interactive exhibits of iconic items, including the Benin Bronzes, Nok Terracottas, and Igbo-Ukwu artifacts.

It also includes oral histories, traditional music, and virtual tours of key cultural sites across the country.

The project aims to preserve these treasures for future generations while countering the loss of artifacts due to looting or degradation.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa-Musawa, emphasized the platform’s role in reclaiming Nigeria’s narrative and fostering global appreciation of its cultural diversity.

The initiative, supported by partnerships with tech firms and international cultural organizations, also provides educational resources for schools and researchers.

The digital museum is accessible to the public via a dedicated website and mobile app, with plans to expand its collection and integrate augmented reality features by 2026.

This move positions Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s digital heritage preservation efforts.
