In a bold move to address Nigeria’s growing food security challenges, Senator Ned Nwoko has proposed the establishment, development, and management of ranches in all 774 local government areas (LGAs) and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The senator, representing Delta North, unveiled the ambitious plan during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize agriculture, reduce herder-farmer conflicts, and ensure sustainable livestock production.
Nwoko’s proposal comes amid rising concerns over food inflation, insecurity, and recurrent clashes between herders and farmers, which have disrupted agricultural activities in many parts of the country.
He argued that a structured ranching system would modernize livestock farming, create jobs, and increase the availability of meat, dairy, and other animal products to meet Nigeria’s growing demand.
“Ranching is a global best practice that we must adopt to secure our food supply chain,” Nwoko said.
“By establishing ranches in every LGA, we can localize livestock production, reduce nomadic herding, and promote peace between communities while boosting the economy.”
The senator outlined that the initiative would involve federal and state governments collaborating with private investors to set up modern ranches equipped with processing facilities, grazing fields, and veterinary services.
He also called for training programs to equip local farmers and herders with skills in modern livestock management.
Nwoko highlighted the economic benefits, noting that ranches could serve as hubs for agro-industrial activities, generating employment for millions of youths and reducing rural-urban migration.
“Each ranch can be tailored to the specific needs and resources of its local government, ensuring inclusivity and sustainability,” he added.
The proposal has sparked mixed reactions. Agricultural expert Dr. Amina Yusuf praised the initiative, stating, “This is a forward-thinking approach that could transform Nigeria’s livestock sector and reduce dependence on imports.”
However, some critics, including representatives of nomadic herders, expressed concerns about the feasibility of implementing such a widespread project, citing funding constraints and the need for extensive stakeholder consultations.
The senator urged the federal government to prioritize the initiative in the 2026 budget, proposing that initial funding could be sourced through public-private partnerships and international grants.
He also called for the creation of a National Ranching Development Commission to oversee the project’s implementation.
As Nigeria grapples with food insecurity exacerbated by climate change and insecurity, Nwoko’s proposal has ignited a national conversation about the future of agriculture.
