Nicholas Francis Giroux, a 37-year-old resident of Odenton, has been sentenced to life imprisonment plus 20 years for the first-degree murder of 27-year-old Nigerian boxer Isaiah Olugbemi.
The sentencing took place on August 26, 2025, following Giroux’s guilty plea on February 28, 2025, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess described Olugbemi as “a father and rising star in amateur boxing,” condemning the “cruel and senseless murder” that ended a life of great promise.
“The callousness and lack of remorse by the defendant is deeply disturbing. He deserves this sentence, and I hope it brings some justice to Olugbemi’s family and friends,” Leitess stated.
The incident occurred on June 17, 2024, when police responded to a shooting in the 500 block of Meadowmist Way, Odenton.
Olugbemi, shot multiple times, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Video evidence showed Giroux firing several shots at Olugbemi until he collapsed, then shooting him three more times.
Police revealed that two weeks prior, Giroux had confronted Olugbemi and a neighbor during a cookout, displaying a gun but not pointing it, which led to no arrests at the time.
On June 18, 2024, Giroux confessed to the murder during a police interview.Olugbemi, a celebrated figure in Maryland’s boxing community, had won the National Golden Gloves Championship in Washington, D.C., in May 2024 and another amateur bout just a week before his death.
He was poised to turn professional by the end of 2024, according to Jim Hook, owner of the Anne Arundel County gym where Olugbemi trained.
“The last text I sent him was after his win, saying, ‘I’m so proud of you, you accomplished your dreams,’” Hook recalled.
The sentencing closes a tragic chapter for Olugbemi’s family and the boxing community, who mourn the loss of a talented athlete with a bright future.
