The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Chapter, has called for a minimum wage increase to N150,000 for Lagos State workers, following recent wage hikes by the Imo and Ebonyi state governments.
NLC Lagos Chairperson, Mrs. Funmi Sesi, made the demand on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in response to these developments, as reported to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Sesi argued that the current N85,000 minimum wage in Lagos is inadequate given the high costs of accommodation, transport, feeding, and utilities in the state compared to others.
She praised the wage increases in Imo (from N76,000 to N104,000, announced by Governor Hope Uzodimma) and Ebonyi (from N70,000 to N90,000, announced by Commissioner Chief Ikeuwa Omebe) as positive steps for Nigeria’s labor force, urging other states to follow suit.
“The time has come for Lagos to review its minimum wage upward. Imo and Ebonyi have set a precedent, and Governor Sanwo-Olu can now implement a higher wage for Lagos workers, who deserve better pay and conditions reflecting the economic realities, especially in Lagos,” Sesi said.
She expressed eagerness for discussions with the state government to secure an improved welfare package for workers.
