The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, has ordered the immediate arrest and trial of police officers accused of extorting ₦200,000 from Taiwo Kayode Taye, a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa.
The incident, which sparked outrage among students, occurred when officers from the Anti-Cultism Unit stopped Taye at Erin-Ile while he was traveling to Oshogbo in a commercial vehicle.
According to reports, the officers demanded that Taye unlock his mobile phone during a search, which he refused. Angered by his refusal, they allegedly dragged him to Ijagbo Police Division.
When Taye continued to resist unlocking his phone, the case was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Ilorin, where he was reportedly coerced into transferring ₦200,000 to an account under the name Lucy Akor.
Speaking to journalists via telephone on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, CP Ojo expressed embarrassment and disappointment over the officers’ conduct.
“I was embarrassed by the conduct of the officers involved,” he said, confirming that he has ordered their arrest and assured that they will face appropriate disciplinary action.
The incident triggered widespread anger, particularly among students of Federal Polytechnic, Offa, who took to social media to demand justice, amplifying the case through posts and hashtags.
A police source, speaking anonymously, confirmed the details of the extortion, further fueling public outcry.
The Kwara State Police Command has vowed to investigate the matter thoroughly, with Ojo emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for unprofessional conduct.
