In a landmark initiative to transform healthcare delivery at the grassroots level, the Kano State Government, in partnership with the World Bank, has pledged over N24 billion to upgrade primary healthcare centres (PHCs) across all 44 local government areas of the state.
The project, launched under the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) initiative, aims to bolster maternal and child healthcare services and address critical gaps in rural healthcare infrastructure.
The flag-off ceremony, held on Thursday in Takai Local Government Area, marked the beginning of a comprehensive effort to revitalize 191 PHCs statewide.
Speaking at the event, Kano State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, emphasized the administration’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare.
“This collaboration with the World Bank under the IMPACT project demonstrates Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s dedication to rebuilding the foundation of our healthcare system,” he stated.
The initiative includes the construction of staff quarters, such as those inaugurated at Durbunde Primary Health Centre, to address healthcare worker shortages in rural areas and ensure 24-hour service delivery.
Governor Yusuf, who presided over the launch, also flagged off the distribution of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, supported by a N1 billion partnership with UNICEF.
“This is a clear indication that the present administration is focused on rebuilding healthcare from the ground up,” the governor remarked, highlighting the state’s commitment to tackling malnutrition and improving health outcomes.
The project extends beyond infrastructure upgrades. The state has expanded maternal health services, distributing 25,000 to 30,000 free antenatal kits monthly and providing 6,000 delivery kits, including 500 Caesarean section kits, to ensure safer childbirth experiences.
Additionally, 18 PHCs are being upgraded to secondary healthcare facilities to enhance access to emergency care, addressing long-standing challenges faced by rural communities.
The Kano State Government’s efforts build on prior initiatives, such as the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), which has shown progress in improving PHC services.
A 2023 study revealed that 61.7% of healthcare workers in Kano’s PHCs were aware of the BHCPF, with 57.1% reporting good utilization, indicating a foundation for further advancements through the IMPACT project.
This N24 billion investment reflects a broader push toward universal health coverage in Kano, aligning with national goals to improve health indices.
Governor Yusuf urged contractors to adhere to high standards and complete the renovations within the stipulated timeframe, ensuring that the benefits reach the people of Kano promptly.
