Japan Denies Presidency's Special Visa Claim for Skilled Nigerians

Japan has rejected claims by Nigeria’s presidency under President Bola Tinubu that a special visa category for skilled Nigerians to live and work in Japan was in the works, calling the assertions false.

The controversy arose after Nigeria’s State House announced that the “Africa Hometown” initiative, unveiled by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at TICAD 9 in Yokohama, would include a special visa for Nigerians to work in Kisarazu.

The program pairs four Japanese cities, including Kisarazu with Nigeria, for cultural and cooperative exchanges involving JICA volunteers.

On August 26, 2025, Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified:

“There are no plans to promote immigration or issue special visas for African residents.”

The ministry emphasized that the initiative focuses on exchange activities, not migration, and pledged to correct misinformation.

The Nigerian government has not responded to Japan’s rebuttal, raising concerns about communication accuracy in bilateral relations.
