Former President Goodluck Jonathan says the hilltop
residence of the ex-military President Ibrahim Babangida remains a Mecca of
sorts due to his leadership qualities.
Jonathan spoke in Minna, the capital of Niger state, on
Sunday, when he led a delegation of well-wishers to visit Babangida on the
occasion of his 84th birthday.
He described Babangida as a committed leader who always
stands for the unity of the country.
“Nigeria has produced leaders since independence, but
General Babangida stands out clearly as one of those who want the best for the
country,” Jonathan said.
“That is why today, his house is like a Mecca of sorts.
People come to him regularly, and that tells you a lot about the character of
IBB.”
The former president said Babangida never saw himself as a
sectional leader but as one who believed in Nigeria’s unity, noting that he
would continue to be celebrated for his contributions to national cohesion.
“Our prayer for him is for God to grant him long life so
that he can continue to mentor the younger ones to follow his exemplary
footsteps,” he said.
