Grenade Explosion K!lls Three Children in Borno

A devastating grenade explosion rocked Pulka town in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, claiming the lives of three children: Fati Dahiru, Aisha Ibrahim, and Fati Yakubu.

The tragic incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2025, when the children, while playing, unknowingly detonated a grenade believed to have been abandoned by Boko Haram insurgents.

According to Buba Yaga, a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), the explosion prompted an immediate response from a combined team of the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD-CBRN) unit, troops of Operation Hadin Kai, CJTF, and local hunters.

The team swiftly cordoned off the area, conducted a thorough sweep for additional explosive devices, and declared the site safe after finding no further threats.

The injured children were rushed to the General Hospital in Gwoza, where medical staff pronounced them dead on arrival.

Their bodies have since been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The incident underscores the lingering dangers of unexploded ordnance in areas affected by insurgency.

Authorities have issued an urgent appeal to residents to report any suspicious objects to security agencies immediately to prevent future tragedies.

“This heartbreaking loss could have been avoided,” said a police spokesperson, urging heightened vigilance in communities recovering from conflict.

The Borno State Police Command and Operation Hadin Kai have reiterated their commitment to ensuring safety and clearing remnants of war to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children, in the region.
