Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state, raising it to N20,000.
The announcement, made during a courtesy visit by NYSC Director-General Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu to the Government House in Enugu on August 18, 2025, has been widely lauded as a significant step toward improving corps members’ welfare.
Nafiu commended Mbah for the initiative, noting that it reflects the governor’s commitment to supporting the NYSC scheme.
He also praised the ongoing reconstruction of the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Awgu, a historic site established in 1973, which Mbah pledged to complete before the end of 2025.
“This gesture shows how much the governor values the NYSC and the contributions of corps members,” Nafiu said during the visit, which aimed to inspect the camp and strengthen ties with the state government.
State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Lloyd Ekweremadu, revealed that corps members in the medical sector are already benefiting from enhanced allowances, with doctors receiving N80,000 and nurses N40,000 monthly, while the N20,000 increment for others will be rolled out soon.
The initiative complements Mbah’s broader welfare efforts, including a recent N80,000 minimum wage for state workers.
Mbah emphasized the NYSC’s role in fostering national unity and supporting state development, noting that corps members contribute significantly to Enugu’s education and healthcare sectors.
“Some work in hospitals, teach in schools, and assist in our development programs,” he said, assuring continued support for their safety and welfare.
The governor also highlighted the symbolic importance of the Awgu camp, a hub for post-civil war reconciliation, and vowed to modernize its facilities.
Corps members and local leaders have hailed Mbah’s decision.
The outgoing 2024 Batch B, Stream 2 corps members in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area recently praised the governor for improved security and governance, crediting his administration with transformative projects like Smart Green Schools and road construction.
