The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a new digital platform designed to empower citizens to report fraudulent activities in the real estate sector, submit supporting evidence, and monitor the status of their complaints in real time.
Launched by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (FMHUD) on August 26, 2025, the Housing Fraud Detection and Reporting Portal marks a significant step toward regulating the housing industry and protecting Nigerians from scams that have long plagued the sector.
Accessible at https://reports.fmhud.gov.ng, the user-friendly web-based tool was developed in partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
It allows individuals to file complaints about sharp practices, such as land grabbing, fake property sales, and non-delivery of promised estates, while providing a secure channel to upload documents like contracts, receipts, and photos.
The ministry emphasized that all reports will be reviewed collaboratively with professional bodies, law enforcement, and the judiciary to ensure swift investigations and prosecutions.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, described the initiative as a direct response to the 2012 National Housing Policy, which calls for stronger regulatory frameworks to monitor housing delivery and certify estate developers.
"Hardworking citizens have fallen prey to fraudulent practices by unscrupulous operators in the real estate industry for too long," Dangiwa stated during the launch event, which featured live demonstrations by technical consultants Freestone Investments Limited and Prunedge Development Technologies Limited.
"This portal provides a credible, safe, and transparent channel to report fraud, track cases, and enable decisive action against culprits. Sharp practices will no longer be tolerated; offenders will face the full weight of the law."
The move aligns with broader efforts to enhance transparency in the sector, including the recent introduction of the Contract Performance and Compliance Project Monitoring System (CPCPMS), which tracks housing project progress and contractor performance.
Dangiwa highlighted that the policy also aims to establish a National Housing and Urban Development Regulatory Commission for overall sector coordination.
This launch comes amid growing concerns over real estate fraud in Nigeria, where unregulated developers have defrauded thousands of investors of billions of naira annually through tactics like selling non-existent plots or misrepresenting project statuses.
Experts note that the portal could restore public confidence, boost legitimate investments, and support the government's Renewed Hope Agenda for affordable housing.
Users are encouraged to visit the site for guidance on reporting, with the ministry assuring confidentiality and prompt follow-upon valid complaints.
