The Federal Government has approved N142 billion for the construction of new bus terminals across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, aiming to enhance road transportation infrastructure and address commuter challenges.
The decision was made during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The Minister of Transportation, Sai’du Alkali, announced the approval to State House Correspondents, revealing that the terminals will be located in Abeokuta (South-West), Gombe (North-East), Kano (North-West), Lokoja (North-Central), Onitsha (South-East), and Ewu in Edo State (South-South).
Alkali emphasized the economic viability of these locations, marking the first time the government is investing in road infrastructure beyond construction.
“This initiative addresses the absence of proper bus terminals, which has led to increased crime, road traffic accidents, and the proliferation of arms on highways,” Alkali stated.
“These terminals will improve commuter safety and connectivity nationwide.”
Additionally, the FEC directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies handling contracts under the 2024 Appropriation to complete their procurement processes by September 30, 2025, to ensure timely project execution.
