The Edo State Government announced a ban on the activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) due to their involvement in illegal revenue collection.
The decision aims to curb unauthorized levies and extortion practices that have burdened commercial drivers and residents across the state.
In a statement released by the Edo State Government, authorities reiterated that the ban targets unions and groups engaged in unlawful ticketing and revenue collection on roads, which disrupts the transport sector and exploits citizens.
The government clarified that only Akugbe Ventures is authorized to collect Personal Income Tax from specific categories of transport operators, as stipulated by state law. Any other group or individual collecting dues on roads is acting illegally and will face prosecution.
This move follows long-standing concerns about the activities of NURTW and RTEAN, which have previously been linked to controversial practices, including extortion and coercive revenue collection.
The state’s directive emphasizes compliance with the Taxes and Levies Act, urging all eligible taxpayers to file returns and make payments through designated Edo State Internal Revenue Service offices.
The government’s action is part of broader efforts to restore order in the transport sector and protect residents from exploitation.
“We are committed to ensuring peace, progress, and fairness in Edo State,” a government spokesperson said, warning that violators of the ban will face strict sanctions.
Transport operators and residents have been advised to report any illegal revenue collection to the authorities.
The Edo State Government has called for cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and lawful transport system in the state.
