CDS Musa Links Surge in Nationwide Killings to 2027 Election Politics

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has attributed the recent spike in killings across Nigeria to political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday evening, August 21, 2025, Musa highlighted a disturbing rise in insecurity compared to the previous year, connecting it to efforts to destabilize the country for political gain.

Nigeria has faced escalating violence, with terrorist activities intensifying in the North-East, frequent bandit attacks in the North-West, and persistent violence in Benue and Plateau states.

A tragic example occurred on Monday, when at least 34 people were killed during prayers at a mosque in Unguwar Mantau, Malumfashi Local Government Area, Katsina State.

Musa stated, “Criminals, both bandits and terrorists, work together with a common goal to make money and destabilize communities. But there’s a political angle. Some individuals don’t want peace because peace reflects well on the government.

When there’s chaos, the government is seen as failing.” He noted that last year saw the lowest number of deaths, but this year’s sudden surge coincides with the approaching election cycle.

“You cannot rule out that some people are controlling these criminals to ensure no peace, discrediting governance. But how do you kill the people you want to govern? What do you gain?” he questioned.

The CDS also revealed ongoing efforts to curb terrorism financing, with the Attorney General of the Federation and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) making arrests and initiating prosecutions.

He cited progress in cases like the Owo bombing, where suspects are already facing trial, emphasizing the complexity of tackling international funding networks behind such crimes.
