British Airways faced significant disruption today when it denied boarding to 58 passengers on its scheduled Abuja to London flight after discovering a faulty door on the aircraft.
The decision, made in the interest of passenger safety, was confirmed by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
The issue was identified during pre-flight inspections at Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, prompting the airline to take immediate action.
To comply with safety regulations, British Airways opted to operate the flight with a reduced passenger load, leaving several seats unoccupied to ensure the aircraft met operational safety standards.
In a statement, British Airways apologized for the inconvenience, emphasizing that passenger safety remains their top priority.
"We regret the disruption caused to our customers and are working to re-accommodate affected passengers on the next available flights," the airline said.
The NCAA commended the airline’s swift response, noting that the decision aligned with international aviation safety protocols.
Passengers affected by the incident expressed frustration but acknowledged the necessity of the measures.
"It’s disappointing, but I’d rather be safe on the ground than risk it in the air," said Chinedu Okeke, one of the impacted travelers.
British Airways has arranged alternative flights and provided support, including hotel accommodations and meal vouchers, for the affected passengers.
The airline is also conducting a thorough investigation into the faulty door to prevent future occurrences.
The NCAA has assured the public that it will monitor the situation closely to ensure compliance with safety standards.
