Borno Police Discovers Bomb on Dikwa Farmland

Operatives of the Borno State Police Command have discovered an unexploded ordnance on a farmland in the Dikwa Local Government Area, raising fresh concerns about the lingering dangers of insurgent activities in the region.

The device, suspected to be a remnant of Boko Haram’s activities, was found on August 16, 2025, during a routine patrol by the police anti-bomb squad in the restive area.

According to a statement from the Borno State Police Command, the ordnance was located on a farm near the village of Mafa in Dikwa, a region that has faced years of violence linked to the Boko Haram insurgency.

The police, acting on intelligence from local farmers who reported a suspicious object, deployed their Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to the site.

The team successfully secured the area and safely retrieved the device for further analysis.ASP Kenneth Daso, the Borno Police spokesperson, confirmed the discovery, noting that the ordnance posed a significant risk to farmers and residents in the area.

“Our operatives acted swiftly to neutralize the threat, ensuring the safety of the community,” Daso said. “We are working with other security agencies to conduct further sweeps of the area to prevent similar incidents.”

Local farmers, who rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, expressed relief at the police intervention but voiced fears about working in areas littered with such dangers.

“We can’t farm in peace knowing things like this are buried in our lands,” said Musa Ali, a farmer in Mafa.

The Borno State Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious objects to security operatives immediately.

The command also commended the cooperation of the local community, which played a critical role in identifying the ordnance.

Authorities have promised to intensify patrols and collaborate with the Nigerian Army and other agencies to clear farmlands and villages of potential explosives.

This incident follows a series of efforts by security forces to secure Dikwa and other parts of Borno State, which have been hotspots for Boko Haram attacks.

Despite recent military successes, including the neutralization of several insurgents, the presence of unexploded ordnances highlights the long-term challenges of achieving lasting peace in the region.

The police have assured residents that investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the device and prevent future occurrences.
