A deadly ambush by Boko Haram insurgents on a military base in Borno State has left two Nigerian soldiers dead and prompted several others to flee across the border into Cameroon, security sources revealed.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, targeted a military outpost in the restive northeastern region, highlighting the ongoing challenge of combating the terrorist group.
According to reports, the insurgents launched a fierce assault with heavy weaponry, overpowering the troops stationed at the base.
The two soldiers were killed during intense fighting, while others, unable to hold their ground, sought safety in Cameroon.
The attackers looted arms and supplies before setting parts of the base on fire, leaving significant damage in their wake.
A security source described the assault as “well-coordinated,” noting that the insurgents exploited the element of surprise.
“The soldiers fought bravely, but the sheer force and numbers of the attackers were overwhelming,” the source said.
The troops who fled were later repatriated to Nigeria, though details about their numbers remain unclear.
The attack has reignited public frustration over the persistent insecurity in Borno, despite government assurances of progress in the fight against Boko Haram.
Local residents expressed alarm, with many urging the military to deploy better-equipped forces to prevent further attacks. “We live in fear every day. The government needs to do more to protect us,” said Aisha Mohammed, a resident of a nearby village.
This incident follows a pattern of recent attacks, and ongoing violence across Nigeria’s northern regions, including a separate case in Zamfara where kidnappers executed victims unable to pay ransom.
The Nigerian Army is yet to release an official statement, but operations are reportedly underway to pursue the attackers and secure the area.
