The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has said it is concerned and would take action about the profane content of the Big Brother Naija reality show.
NBC made the remark while acknowledging the receipt of a
petition by activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam calling for the ban or restriction
of the airing of the Big Brother Naija, BBNaija, reality show in public areas.
Idam had charged the NBC to ban or restrict the reality show
within 30 days or risk legal action.
He said the programme should be banned due to its obscene,
indecent, and profane content, pursuant to the NBC Act of 1999.
The receipt of the petition was acknowledged by NBC’s
Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Pauline Ehusani, on behalf of the Director.
Acknowledging the petition, NBC said: “Your complaint dated
4th August 2025, in respect of the above subject matter.
“Kindly note that our Act is now referred to as the National
Broadcasting Commission Act, Cap N11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
“Regarding the subject of your complaint, please be informed
that the Commission is equally concerned with the brazen contravention of the
provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code (6th Edition) which clearly
prohibit the airing of obscene content.
“Be assured that the Management of the Commission is already
on the issue and vital decisions will be taken to ensure compliance with the
rules by all concerned.
“In the same vein, the Commission is tasking you and other
well-meaning Nigerians to immediately flag such content as soon as it appears
on social media; if flagged enough, such content could be taken down
permanently.
“Thank you, as the Commission assures you of our commitment
to ethical standards.”
