The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) has announced August 17, 2026, as the date for the state’s local government elections.
The decision, revealed on August 16, 2025, aligns with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, ensuring compliance with national electoral guidelines.
BASIEC Chairman, Ahmed Makama, disclosed the schedule during a press briefing in Bauchi, emphasizing the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections across the state’s 20 local government areas.
The elections will determine chairmanship and councillorship positions, following the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming local government autonomy.
Makama urged political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to prepare for the polls, assuring them of a transparent process.
“We are working to ensure that the will of the people is reflected in the outcome of these elections,” he said, adding that BASIEC would soon release a detailed timetable for the electoral process.
The announcement comes amid ongoing political developments in Bauchi, including recent controversies surrounding the 2024 local government elections, where the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) swept all 20 chairmanship seats, prompting allegations of irregularities from opposition parties like the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
These concerns highlight the need for BASIEC to strengthen public trust in the upcoming 2026 elections.
Governor Bala Mohammed, who has been vocal about promoting democratic practices, is expected to support BASIEC’s efforts to deliver a credible electoral process.
The state government has pledged logistical and financial support to ensure the elections are conducted smoothly.
