The All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, accusing them of orchestrating a plot to undermine Nigeria’s unity, peace, and progress.
The ruling party alleges that the duo’s political maneuvers within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) aim to disrupt the country’s power rotation arrangement, a principle designed to foster national cohesion.
In a statement issued by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, on X, the party claimed that El-Rufai is attempting to impose Atiku as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, despite the current presidency being held by the South under President Bola Tinubu.
“El-Rufai and Atiku want to do to Nigeria what Atiku did to PDP. The El-Rufai and Atiku hijacked ADC constitute a clear and present threat to the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria,” Morka declared.
The APC’s allegations stem from El-Rufai’s recent criticism of the Tinubu administration during a political meeting in Sokoto on August 2, 2025, where he reportedly described the government as “incompetent and clannish.” Morka dismissed these remarks as “mischievous and hollow,” attributing them to El-Rufai’s bitterness over his failed bid for a ministerial appointment in 2023.
The party further accused El-Rufai of a legacy of “bad governance” in Kaduna, citing a N284 billion debt profile and allegations of marginalizing Southern Kaduna minorities.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2023, and El-Rufai, who defected from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in March 2025 before aligning with the ADC, are said to be leading a coalition of opposition heavyweights, including former Senate President David Mark and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
However, tensions within the ADC are already apparent. Reports indicate that El-Rufai, who supported a southern presidency in 2023, is uneasy with Atiku’s presidential ambitions, insisting the presidency should remain in the South until at least 2031 to honor the rotational principle.
This internal rift has raised doubts about the coalition’s unity, with some insiders warning that Atiku’s candidacy could jeopardize the ADC’s electoral prospects.
