62 Kidnap Victims Escape Bandits’ Camp After Nigerian Air Force Airstrike in Katsina

In a daring escape, at least 62 abducted persons, including women and children, fled a bandits’ camp in Katsina State following a precise airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

The operation targeted the stronghold of notorious bandit leader Muhammadu Fulani in Jigawa Sawai, Danmusa Local Government Area, near the Zamfara State border.

According to Dr. Nasir Muazu, Katsina State’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, the airstrike, conducted at 5:10 p.m., disrupted the bandits’ operations, forcing them to abandon their camp and allowing the captives to escape.

Amongst the 62 freed victims, 12 are receiving medical treatment at Matazu General Hospital, while 16 remain under military protection at the Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kaiga Malamai.

The majority of the escapees were kidnapped during a night raid on Sayaya village in Matazu on August 11, 2025, by Fulani’s gang, known for terrorizing communities in Matazu, Kankia, Dutsinma, and parts of Kano State.

Interviews with the rescued victims confirmed that the airstrike triggered chaos in the camp, enabling their escape in multiple directions.

The state government has deployed the NAF’s Quick Response Wing to address ongoing banditry in Matazu and Bakori, with troops actively monitoring the area for additional rescue operations.

The security situation in the region is currently stable, according to official reports.Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda praised the security forces for their bravery and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating banditry.

Authorities are working to reunite the victims with their families after completing medical evaluations, ensuring their safe return to their communities.
