3rd Mainland Bridge Rehab to Cost ₦3.6 Trillion Due to Underwater Structural Damages

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has revealed that the iconic 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos is facing significant structural challenges with its underwater components, necessitating urgent rehabilitation.

The estimated cost for the comprehensive repair of the bridge is projected at a staggering N3.6 trillion.

During a press briefing in Lagos on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Umahi disclosed that recent inspections uncovered critical issues in the bridge’s underwater support structures, which have deteriorated over time due to prolonged exposure to water and environmental factors.

“The 3rd Mainland Bridge is a critical infrastructure for Lagos and Nigeria as a whole. Our assessments show that the underwater structures are compromised, and we cannot delay action,” Umahi stated.

The minister emphasized that the rehabilitation would involve advanced engineering techniques to reinforce the underwater pillars and ensure the bridge’s long-term stability.

He noted that the high cost reflects the complexity of the project, including specialized equipment, materials, and expertise required for underwater repairs.

Umahi assured the public that the Federal Government is committed to securing funding for the project, with plans to engage international partners and private investors to offset the financial burden.

“We are exploring all avenues, including public-private partnerships, to ensure this vital artery of Lagos remains safe and functional,” he said.

The 3rd Mainland Bridge, one of Africa’s longest bridges, connects Lagos Island to the mainland, serving as a critical route for millions of commuters daily.

The announcement has raised concerns among residents about potential disruptions during the rehabilitation process.

Umahi, however, promised that measures would be put in place to minimize inconvenience, including phased repairs and alternative traffic management plans.

The minister called for patience and cooperation from Lagosians, stressing that the project is essential for public safety and economic stability.

“This is a national priority. We are working to ensure the 3rd Mainland Bridge remains a safe and reliable infrastructure for generations to come,” he concluded.

Further details on the project timeline and funding arrangements are expected to be released in the coming weeks as the government finalizes its plans.
