Former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmed, has raised alarm over what he describes as “subtle moves” by certain political figures to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for president in 2027.
According to Ahmed, these elements see Jonathan’s candidacy as an easy sell in Northern Nigeria, banking on the promise of a single-term presidency to secure regional support.
In a statement shared on X, Ahmed criticized the campaign as driven by “political convenience and power rotation” rather than a genuine focus on what Jonathan could offer the North or the nation.
“The North deserves more than being used as a political ladder,” Ahmed declared, sparking debates about regional politics and the motives behind the rumored push as the 2027 elections draw closer.
"From all indications, there are ongoing subtle moves by certain political elements trying to convince former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest again in 2027. They calculate that his candidacy will be easy to market in the North under the guise that he would only serve a single term.
"But the troubling part is that this push is not rooted in what he would offer the North or the country at large, but merely in political convenience and power rotation.
The North deserves more than being used as a political ladder".
