The Federal Ministry of Education announced that the University of Maiduguri will now be called Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, to honor the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s dedication to education, institutional reform, and national development.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo, the decision was revealed during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, to commemorate the former president.
Tinubu approved the renaming, praising Buhari as a statesman who championed national security, economic recovery, anti-corruption initiatives, and education.
The FEC session featured tributes from key figures, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, state governors, ministers, and the Head of the Civil Service. Yusuf Buhari, the late president’s son, spoke on behalf of the family.
Education Minister Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa described the renaming as a “symbolic gesture” recognizing Buhari’s impact through policies like the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, and social investment initiatives focused on human capital development.
The Ministry emphasized that the renaming aligns with President Tinubu’s vision of education as a cornerstone of national progress, committing to uphold the values of service, integrity, and excellence embodied by both leaders.
