Vice President Kashim Shettima recently made a statement that has sparked controversy in Nigeria's political landscape.
Shettima made the appeal during a book launch in Abuja on Thursday afternoon, for “OPL245: The Inside Story of the $1.3b Nigerian Oil Bloc”, authored by Mohammed Bello Adoke, former Attorney General. He stressed that political actors share more commonalities than differences, urging them to focus on shared goals over partisanship.
He said, "We have PDP, we have new PDP, we have the coalition represented by my elder brother Elrufai, we have NNPP-APC represented by Kwankwaso. What binds us together supersedes whatever divides us; we are all one."
This statement implies that various political parties, including the PDP, NNPP, and APC, are coming together under one umbrella.
Shettima emphasized the importance of national unity and collaboration among politicians from different parties, including APC, PDP, ADC, and NNPP.
His statement has raised questions about potential realignments in Nigerian politics, with some speculating that opposition parties may be absorbed into the ruling APC. Critics worry that this unity might come at the cost of ideological diversity and accountability in Nigerian politics.
Some analysts believe Shettima's comments reflect a pragmatic approach to governance, prioritizing stability and development over rivalry. Others see it as a potential threat to democracy, warning that it might lead to a one-party dominance and reduce meaningful choices in future elections.
